Mother's Day Cards and Donation Cards
Every year we celebrate Mother's Day by selling cards to either honour or remember our loved ones. Whether you send a card to a mother, a grandmother, a friend or to someone you lost touch with...it will bring a smile to their face and appreciate that your generosity will help a mother in Israel who is struggling to bring up her children. Both Mother's Day cards and donation cards are very successful fundraising projects.
School Supplies for Kids
Many children in the Ottawa area, whose families have been affected by violence and have fled to domestic violence shelters, could be returning to school this fall with few or no resources to buy school supplies. Na'amat Canada has stepped up to fill this need with our School Supplies for Kids project. Danielle Schneiderman is the program's chair for Ottawa. Ottawa Community Foundation (OCF) has provided us with a grant and plans are underway to provide children in eight Ottawa shelters a gift of new backpacks filled with the tools they need to enter school.

Message from Na'amat Canada Ottawa Leadership
Na’amat Canada Ottawa is open to new members!
Na’amat Canada Ottawa has two active chapters, the Aviva Chapter of women in their 60’s and beyond, and the Otzma chapter with women in their 40’s and beyond. Both chapters meet throughout the year for a variety of interesting programs and activities.
Na’amat Canada Ottawa is led by the Na’amat Canada Ottawa Council, a group representing leadership from the two local chapters as well as other long-time local and national leaders. Council meets as necessary throughout the year to manage the local administration and to plan city-wide events.
With the current restrictions on in-person programming, we have had to use our creativity to schedule online meetings and events with the occasional socially-distanced outdoor get-together (in warmer months). Some of our programming has included a book review each spring, led by Mary Rubin, who digs deep to research themes and lessons from each book. We are currently planning our next book review for later this spring.
Some recent programs have included a Babka Bake, an Instant Pot demonstration, a session on the art of storytelling, a talk by a member of a local synagogue who went to Tanzania with her congregation and clergy to donate a Torah, Chanukah trivia and candle lighting, and more! Many more interesting and engaging programs are planned for each month.
This year, due to the great deal of interest in learning more about the pandemic, vaccines and other treatments, we are pleased to be hosting Dr. Agnes Klein to speak on this topic January 21st. This event is open to members from across the country.
Ottawa author Barbara Fradkin will be joining us later in the year, probably virtually, for an author’s talk, featuring her new mystery coming out shortly.
Due to the pandemic, we are delaying our next issue of the Ottawa Jewish Directory and have used the opportunity to update our listings so they are as current as possible.
Through these challenging times, it is important to connect with members, even if it is virtually. We can enjoy togetherness in a safe way, and look forward to being together in person in the future.
