Project Headband from Na'amat Galim Vancouver

Last January 2018, Ruth and her friend Marion (86) spearheaded Project Headband.

The goal was to crochet or knit warm headbands for those less fortunate. Our Na’amatniks were invited to a session to learn how to crochet with Marion and Ruth.

Over 150 headbands were made, some by our members and others were made by family members and friends. Amazingly, Marion made over 80 headbands.

This past January 2019, the headbands were given to clients at the Jewish Food Bank. The colourful headbands were well received and the clients were very thankful.

The rest of the headbands were distributed to the women of the Vancouver Downtown Eastside.

Hamentshen Awards

Vancouver’s major fundraiser each year is our sale of Hamentshen. We honoured our Major Hamentshen members at an awards ceremony complete with trophies created and made by two of our members Sara and Karen.

The 2nd Annual Soup Making!

We gathered in a member’s kitchen. In true Jewish Mother and Bubbe style, we cooked together. We divided into 3 groups and each group created a sumptuous soup following a previously chosen recipe. From the finished product, 2 of the soups were divided up and we each took home samples. The third batch was frozen and later devoured at our annual retreat.

Featured Chapter

Na’amat Galim is the Vancouver Chapter, with its membership comprised of a group of dynamic and interesting women in their 50’s and 60’s. Our programming is a blend of music, speakers, crafts and outreach programs as well as a much looked forward to annual retreat in Whistler. The women of Galim are known in the Vancouver community for our Purim Hamantashen Bake Sale and Rosh Hashanah cakes. This year we are excited about our outreach program which includes baking and providing food for the Jewish Food Bank and supporting families around Hannukah with a holiday gift basket. We are also excited to be hosting a joint movie presentation at the Vancouver Jewish Film Festival in November 2017.

President's Message

Na’amat Galim, Vancouver’s chapter was established in 1991. As the chapter’s current co-presidents, we are both excited and proud to take the helm in leading another great year.

Our chapter consists of a group of dedicated women, who despite coming from a variety of backgrounds, all share a common passion for supporting the important work that Na’amat provides for women and children in Israel.

Some of our members have been in the chapter for over 20 years while others are new. This diversity helps maintain our understanding of where our organization has come from while also allowing us to take on new ideas and evolve. We are always open to growing our group and welcome new members who are interested in joining.

Our chapter meets monthly, with each member taking a turn to host while others contribute by providing tasty treats. At these meetings we make sure to keep things interesting by ensuring we have a variety of activities. Some of our favourite meetings have included hosting guest speakers who facilitate discussion on topics our members are interested in, a musical evening with a professional songwriter/entertainer as well as a crafts event with one of our own members who is a talented artist.

We also have an annual retreat to Whistler where we relax, eat (amazing) pot-luck meals and brainstorm about the upcoming year’s programming and fundraising events.

Although we are always looking for new and creative ways to raise money for Na’amat, in the community, the women of Galim are recognized for our highly successful annual Purim Hamentashen Bake Sale as well as for our Rosh Hashanah Cakes.

This year we are excited to implement our outreach program which includes providing a Chanukah Gift Basket for a needy family ,making and distributing granola bars for those who rely on the Jewish Food Bank. We are also pleased to be co- sponsoring a movie at the Jewish Film Festival .

We want to thank all our wonderful members for their dedication to Na’amat and for making Galim the great chapter that it is.

If you are interested in joining, please contact us by sending an email to or by calling us (604) 257-5177.
