President's Message

Welcome to the National Capital Region/Bienvenue à la région nationale de la capitale/Bruchim habaim le'ir ha'bira

We have five chapters in Ottawa, spanning many generations: Chana Senesh, Aviva, Otzmah, Tikvah and Ma'ayan. We have well over 100 women actively involved and are always happy to welcome new members to our Na'amat family. This year marks the 61st anniversary of the Ottawa Jewish Telephone Directory, headed by Judy Field. The Ottawa Jewish community has been very supportive of this council initiative, which has enabled our city to support Na'amat projects in Israel including the rebuilding of playgrounds at Na'amat daycare centres, the expansion of the Glickman Centre in Tel Aviv, as well as supporting the rights of women and education in Israel. Another phenomenal project on a local level is our School Supplies for Kids program, headed by Danielle Schneiderman. As mandated by our mission to help women and children both in Israel and in Canada, we have fundraising throughout the year at the chapter level and a winter extravaganza at the council level, in addition to interesting speakers and activities throughout the year.

Na'amat Canada Ottawa membership is $36 while individual chapter dues range from just $5 to $10 extra. When you join Na'amat Canada, you not only join a chapter but also become a member of our family.

They're a perfect way for parents and kids to identify family belongings. Kosher labels, bag tags, allergy stickers, and iron-ons are also available. Best of all, when you order Mabel's Labels through www.naamat.mabel.ca, the company donates 20% to Na'amat Canada Ottawa!

School Supplies for Kids
Many children in the Ottawa area, whose families have been affected by violence and have fled to domestic violence shelters, could be returning to school this fall with few or no resources to provide for school supplies. Na'amat Canada has stepped up to fill this need with our School Supplies for Kids project. At the helm of the Ottawa area School Supplies for Kids program is Danielle Schneiderman, the program's local chair. Funding has been secured and plans are underway to provide more than 230 children at eight different shelters, a gift of new backpacks filled with the tools they need to enter new schools. To volunteer to help with this project, please contact naamat.ottawa@sympatico.ca.

Na'amat Reaches New Heights Atop Mount Kilmanjaro
Na'amat Canada Ottawa member Judy Field and spouse Murray Kronick reached Uhuru Peak, the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 meters (19,340 feet), on January 11, 2010. Both Judy and Murray decided to make their Kilimanjaro trek a personal fundraising initiative as well. They raised funds for three charities: Na'amat Canada, Make-a-Wish Foundation and CAN Fund. Judy would like to thank all the Na'amat Canada members who donated to her trek, and in particular, for helping to make a difference for families in Israel.
