President's Message

Dear Chaverot,

Many of you are lifelong members of Na'amat, or longer. You were born into it and it has been a part of your families for several generations. My involvement took a more circuitous route. My parents were Bundists in Poland before the Second World War. They survived the war in Poland and fought courageously in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. After living briefly in Sweden they arrived in Canada in 1949. I was born in Montreal in 1951.

Fast forward to the year 2000 when our beloved member, Gail Flicker z”l, asked my mother to be one of the honourees at the Na'amat Women's Seder. My mother accepted the honour but ultimately was unable to attend due to failing health; I was there and witnessed a moving and beautiful event. I knew from that moment that Na'amat was where I could feel at home. I joined the Seder Committee about two years later and have been a part of this vibrant and important organization ever since.

And now that I have retired from a long teaching career I am ready to assume the presidency of our local organization. I only hope that I can live up to the trust that you have placed in me. With your help, I will try. The women of Israel need us, especially now during these trying times. We must not let them down.

Thank you and shalom,
Mindy Spiegel

Allon Mothers and Daughters:
Na'amat Canada Montreal is very excited about a new initiative which has emerged from within its membership. On April 21, 2010 a Beading & Martini evening was held as a membership outreach program. Among the guests that evening were many first and second generation Na'amat members. The idea for this event came to be when former Allon Chapter members and their daughters wanted to do something together that would benefit Na'amat. The younger women felt that the time had come for them, who grew up with Na'amat gatherings in their homes, to become involved in the organization that their mothers were always most passionate about. The determination of this group, spearheaded by Paula Friedman and her daughters Cari and Allison, made this evening the success that it was. This event, and others like it, linked the past with the present and will ensure the future of Na'amat.

There is no better testament to the mission of Na'amat Canada, and its 85 years of history, than witnessing the continuity and strength of its members.

This group includes fun, energetic women who would welcome any new joiners who want to become part of a great sorority of women!
