President's Message

Come get to know the terrific group of women from Na'amat Calgary! We not only accomplish a great deal with a small group of active members, but we also enjoy the friendships we've formed. Calgary is fortunate to have two lovely groups of women – forming two Na'amat chapters – Kalanit and Yachad. The women in these groups form a generous and supportive ensemble to which newcomers are always welcome. Emily Sztabzyb, our Membership Coordinator, has been reaching out to the Jewish community in Calgary and has also helped plan some great activities. We look forward to welcoming new members to both the Yahad and Kalanit chapters and we invite you to be our guest to take part in any of our programs. Our Chapters

Kalanit: Kalanit is the newest chapter of Na'amat, here in Calgary. It is comprised of a dynamic group of young women, ranging in age from 22 – 35. These young professionals enjoy monthly programs covering a fantastic array of subjects including guest speakers, makeover nights, cooking demos, yoga, and crafts. They also assist in the planning and execution of the larger fundraising programs, alongside the Yachad Chapter.

Kalanit's Opening Meeting

Yachad: Yachad is Calgary's Na'amat chapter for women in their 40s and 50s. The members of this chapter hold monthly meetings at which they enjoy programs that cover the spectrum – from makeover nights to leadership workshops. These women plan and execute at least one major fundraiser per year – this year it is the ever popular Bingo and possibly another Sing-a-Long. They are also responsible for School Supplies for Kids – a program providing backpacks for the less fortunate.

Bingo 2008 was a Great Success! After taking a break for one year, Bingo was back in 2008. Nearly 200 people attended this beloved event on January 26th and they were thrilled that their lucky numbers were being called once again. Not only did the participants have fun, but we raised money for Na'amat Calgary's Rebuilding Lives campaign: providing much needed counselling and shelter to victims of domestic abuse and helping to maintain the Na'amat Canada Glickman Centre for Family Violence Prevention. We extend thanks to our many generous supporters and to all of the businesses who donated prizes for the bingo and silent auction.

Ultimate Frisbee with Kalanit June 25, 2008, 7:00 PM Location: TBC Kalanit member, Shauna Meyerson, will be teaching us the ins and outs of this popular sport – a cross between football and Frisbee! A great workout! Come dressed to sweat. Admission is free. RSVP to Emily 403-238-5311

Kalanit Water Tasting and Yoga Retreat July 27, 2008, 7:00pm Location: Private Home Leora Hornstein of Kalanit will be helping us to stretch and strengthen, cleanse and purify - through her yoga instruction and water tasting. Ticket Fee: free for members; $5 non members. RSVP to Emily 403-238-5311

Rosh Hashannah Card Making with Kalanit Aug. 20, 2008, 7:00pm Location: TBC Let's get a head start on New Year cards – with Emily Sztabzyb. We will be making a gorgeous array of Rosh Hashannah cards to give to your friends and family. Ticket Fee: $5 members, $8 non members, (fee covers materials.) RSVP to Emily 403-238-5311

Fundraising Voices in Song! On May 31, 2007 Na'amat Calgary presented a sing-a-long version of the beloved film “Fiddler on the Roof” at Calgary's Uptown Theatre. The audience raised their voices in song, while raising money for Na'amat Canada's Glickman Centre Bedroom Campaign. The event was a huge success, thanks to our many supporters, especially our Honourary Chairs, Len and Faigel Shapiro. Here's a snapshot of all the fun we had!

Each fall, Na'amat Calgary packs over 1300 backpacks for children in eight Calgary area shelters. Members of Na'amat Calgary liaise with the shelters, sponsors, schools, and the media and they purchase the supplies and arrange for the packing and the delivery of the completed backpacks.
