Bullying Facts:

  • Every 7 minutes a Canadian child is teased, threatened or assaulted in a schoolyard
  • Every 25 minutes a Canadian child is bullied in class
  • Bullying is the most common form of violence in our society
  • Between 15% and 30% of students are bullies or victims
  • 10% of students are bullied on a regular basis
  • 15% of all school absenteeism is directly related to fears of being bullied at school
  • 56% of students have personally witnessed some type of bullying at school
  • 71% of students report bullying as a problem at school

Bouncing Back is an anti-violence, anti-bullying program that is currently being offered by Na'amat Montreal to local elementary schools. During the Bouncing Back program, trained facilitators meet with each class for one hour per week over a period of three consecutive weeks. These facilitators animate stories, conduct activities and provide an open forum for discussion and self-expression on the topic of bullying and aggression. Thanks to our structure of regular seminars, not only do the students get to know the facilitators, but they also have a chance to absorb, retain and build on this new knowledge.

Students will learn about the following topics and focus on:

  • Empathy development and friendship
  • Anger management and conflict resolution strategies
  • Respect for others and understanding differences
  • Identify destructive bullying behaviours and positive response strategies

Since 1999, Bouncing Back facilitators have worked with close to 5000 Montreal schoolchildren. The children represent a cross section of the Montreal community and come from diverse socio-economic, racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds. Bouncing Back is currently active in ten Montreal area schools, including three inner city schools.

Bouncing Back works: Post-program evaluations have demonstrated both short and long term impacts. A few years later, children are still talking about the program. Furthermore, Bouncing Back has received accolades from administrators, teachers, parents and children as well as from local media.
